Scouts reach for the stars with Astronautics Day

24th April 2014
At the end of March 93 Scouts from Thurrock blasted off on a mission to complete their Astronautics badge.

The Scouts spent the day at Orsett Recreational Ground taking part in numerous fun activities including designing their own space mission patch, making a model satellite, experiencing some astronaut training and decorating and firing bottle rockets.

The Scouts were also joined by Hornchurch Airfield Rocket Team (H.A.R.T) who provided the highlight activity of the day: building and launching a solid fuel rocket. All of the rockets had successful launches and returned by parachute, though some had some heavy landings!

Terry Mead, District Scout Leader for Thurrock and co-organiser thought the event was a total success: “All of the Scouts have really enjoyed themselves today and I cannot thank H.A.R.T enough for coming down and giving the Scouts a chance to launch a rocket. They were going 80 feet into the air and the Scouts were having great fun trying to catch them as they descended back to Earth!”

David Tapsell, Assistant District Commissioner for Scouts explained, “This is the first time we have completed a badge as a District and it’s been so successful that we will be looking at repeating this success with other activity badges in the future. It’s a great way to allow the Scouts to achieve some of the badges that may be difficult to organise as a Troop.”
