Thurrock Cubs have a Carnival at camp

15th July 2014
Over 250 Cubs from across Thurrock put on a show at Condovers in June for their annual Circus themed Cub Camp.

The Cubs kicked off the camp with a Grand Howl before becoming financial entrepreneurs with an activity where they had to earn the most cash by buying and selling tokens

The Cubs then had the chance to calm down with their Cubs Own. Reverend Darren Barlow fully embraced the theme by talking about Juggling and the way everyone has to juggle everyday events.

The first act of the Saturday morning was to decorate the sites to look like circus tents, and the best site was judged by visitors from Basildon Scouts.

The rest of the morning was spent creating circus themed jumpers and decorative hats, the tug of war competition started, and Cub had their chance to shine with a “Cubs Got Talent” competition which was overseen and judged by Thurrock Gang Show Director Jan Thurnell.

Saturday lunchtime was a giant circus picnic with the Cubs and their Leaders dressing up and all joining together in the middle of the campsite to eat. This was followed by a colourful Grand Circus Parade.

The afternoon saw a number of fun activities take place including nerf guns, popcorn making, archery, a bar slide, tin can alley, and wet sponge throwing which the Cubs thoroughly enjoyed as the ADC and DDC Youth Programme were both targets!

After dinner the Cubs were challenged with some more mental activities before it was time for the campfire which was run by the District Commissioner, Graham Monk.

The campfire was not the end of the day’s activities however. The Cubs and Leaders were then treated to a surprise display of fire juggling which the young people found very exciting.

Sunday’s activities tested the Cub’s circus skills, with tube spinning, tightrope walking, unicycle, speed stacking, hula hoops, diablo and knife throwing.

Finally, after lunch and while the camp was starting to dismantle, the Cubs were kept entertained by Marky Mark and Magic Marvo.

Steve Cootes, ADC Cubs thought the camp was a great success, “It was great to hear many of the Cubs sigh with disappointment that the camp was over. Even though the weather was not the best, the young people still had a really great weekend.

The support from Chadwell, Stifford Orca, 1st Ockendon, Hillside, Orsett & Bulphan Wolves, 7th Grays Cromwell, Belhus and Chafford Cub packs as well as all of the Active Support Units, Phoenix Network and the staff at Condovers meant that the camp was one of the best ever and many thanks to all the work they contributed to its success.
